Holdfasts were broken up and sieved to collect and identify macrofauna and meiofauna. The amount of oil in the Laminaria stipes was quantified ( g oil per g algae) fluorometrically using a sycnhronous scanning (23 nm interval) technique, with yellow fuel oil as a standard Warwick and Clarke (1995). Univariate 'biodiversity' measures, termed taxonomic diversity and taxonomic distinctness used to describe community composition and structure. The Welsh and North Devon coastal sites include: West Angle, East Angle, Dale Fort, West Blockhouse, Gateholm, Martin's Haven, Musselwick, St. Brides, Abereiddy, Porth Gain, Aber Draw, Abercastle, Hartland Quay, Welcombe Mouth, Morwenstow, Duckpool.
