Skomer Island National Nature Reserve (NNR) - Resurvey of Lichen Quadrats
This dataset is made up of the results from a survey of lichen distribution and cover on Skomer Island following the Sea Empress oil spill. Pembrokeshire is of the highest significance for coastal saxicolous and terricolous lichens and Skomer is a key site in Countryside Council for Wales’ (CCW's) lichen monitoring programme. After the Sea Empress oil spill SEEEC decided the Skomer lichens should be re-surveyed. Record type, distribution and extent of lichens within the 40 quadrats established on Skomer Island. Compare these records with those from earlier surveys and determine the nature of any changes that have taken place. Interpret any changes as far as possible, with special consideration given to those that may be attributable to oil pollution. Re-mark quadrats by indicating their precise position.

Skomer was re-visited during the 6th - 12th April 1997. Quadrats were used for counts. The location and quadrat photographs were taken and recorded as in 1991. Two sizes, 20x30 cm and 10x15 cm with steel wires giving 100 intersection points, were used as defined in Purvis (1992). All photography was carried out using an Olympus OM-2 camera on a tripod. Monitoring efforts and impact assessment following the Sea Empress oil spill. An initial lichen survey was perfomed by Wolseley and James 1988, in 1991 further quadrats were surveyed by the Natural History Museum and a subsequent re-survey was performed in 1994.
