Special Area of Conservation (SAC) Monitoring: Macrophyte Condition Assessment for the Afon Gwyrfai SAC (2007)
The Afon Gwyrfai Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Llyn Cwellyn Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) was notified in 2003 and is considered to be one of the best examples in the United Kingdom of an oligotrophic to mesotrophic river with submerged beds of aquatic plants, especially its Callitricho-Batrachion vegetation community. The purpose of this data capture was to undertake a Condition Assessment of the river macrophyte and river macrophyte-related attributes of the former Countryside Council for Wales CCW's Management Units 2, 5, 6 and 7 of the Afon Gwyrfai.

A Common Standards Monitoring Condition Assessment of Afon Gwyrfai SAC river was used to trial a novel 'macrophyte mapping' survey approach which could be used to complement Common Standards Monitoring and to aid and inform management decisions. This macrophyte mapping method involved walking the banks of the 2 km section and recording the channel flora observed and the major shifts in community composition. The aim of the mapping component was to produce a 'banded map' illustrating these shifts in community composition and structure.
