Survey of the Tentacled Lagoon Worm (Alkmaria romijni) at Carew Castle Mill Pond (2006)
The tentacled lagoon worm (Alkmaria romijni) is a nationally scarce protected species found in lagoonal habitats in the Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation. In Wales it has only been recorded from two saline lagoon sites in Pembrokeshire: Neyland Weir Pool (Westfield Pill) and Carew Castle Mill Pond. Elsewhere in the UK it had been recorded from only a handful of sites in lagoons and estuaries along the English Channel and southern North Sea and internationally between Morocco and the Baltic where it is not uncommon. A romijni is limited to brackish water habitats and threats to these habitats include agricultural run-off and sewage, coastal development and coastal defence as well as pollution from industrial discharges. There were three main purposes of this data capture: - To establish a repeatable baseline survey of the tentacled lagoon worm (Alkmaria romijni) at Carew Castle Mill Pond. - To undertake a spatial survey of salinity at the sediment-water interface - To note field observations on the integrity of the inflow/outflow system or any activities at the site that might be considered to have an adverse effect on the integrity of the site as a saline lagoonal habitat.

Initial survey- A sampling pattern of 20 stations distributed evenly across the whole Mill Pond (stations between 45 and 80m apart), was established prior to the survey using Mapinfo GIS software. The positions derived from the GIS were input into a Garmin handheld GPS in order to enable location of the sampling stations in the field. Once sampling stations had been located , a single grab of the top 20 cm of sediment were taken using a 0.025m2 hand held Ekman grab. Once the grab arrived at the surface, a sample of the water draining out of the grab was put in a pot for later determination of the salinity at the sediment surface. The grab samples were then sieved through a 0.5 mm mesh until most of the fines had been washed away. The sieved sample was then placed in a labelled bucket and topped up with water from the Mill Pond. Samples were taken back to the laboratory. The number of Alkmaria romijni worms together with other species found in the samples were counted. The salinity of the water samples collected from the grabs determined using an Atago hand-hand refractometer. Follow up survey- a sampling technique was adopted following the principles of Adaptive Cluster Sampling (ACS), in which sampling effort is modified in response to observations made during the course of the survey. Initial survey 27 February 2006 follow up survey 15 March 2006.
