Site Condition Assessments of Welsh Standing Water Features (2003 - 2008)
The UK Conservation Agencies have devised a Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) protocol (JNCC, 2005) for the routine monitoring and assessment of protected site condition. The CSM lake monitoring method is based on previous survey protocols used by the conservation agencies. It aims to gather the maximum amount of information relating to the ecology of each water body in the most efficient way possible. The purpose of this data capture was to provide an assessment of the current conservation status of water features in Wales.

Both reports utilise Common Standards Monitoring (CSM) methods (JNCC, 2005)) for SSSIs and SAC designated water features. Data collected includes aquatic macrophyte surveys (carried out following the CSM protocol); physico-chemical data; sedimentary diatoms; lake bathymetries; catchment and habitat maps, which was then used to prepare site condition assessments for each of the lakes. The CSM lake monitoring method is based on previous survey protocols used by the conservation agencies. It aims to gather the maximum amount of information relating to the ecology of each water body in the most efficient way possible. The protocol makes use of a combination of shoreline walks to identify marginals, waded transects to describe the shallow water vegetation and boat-based surveys to identify plants in deeper water. In addition, physicochemical data are collected for each lake. The protocol is described in full in JNCC (2005).

Macrophyte maps and bathymetric maps, provided as .eps files. Habitat maps, provided as Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) files. CSM field survey data, provided within a Microsoft Access database. Photos of all CSM survey sections, provided as JPEG images.
