Between 16th and 19th century these estuaries lost around 2400 Ha of saltmarsh due to land claim. Between the end of the 19th century and end of the 20th the estuaries gained 1136 Ha. The changes in the saltmarsh environment may impact shellfish, invertebrates and wading birds. The purpose of this data capture was to investigate the history of evolution and current trends in the geomorphological development of the estuaries of the then Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC). Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries is now designated fully as an Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for numerous species and habitats including estuaries, mudflats, sand flats and lagoons, which make up 13.7% of the site.
