They may be found in marine inlets and bays but also in other areas, such as lagoons and channels, which are sheltered from significant wave action. The three species of Zostera that occur in the UK, Dwarf eelgrass (Zostera noltii), narrow-leaved eelgrass (Zostera angustifolia), and eelgrass (Zostera marina), are all considered to be scarce (present in 16-100 ten km squares) and have some protection through the EC Habitats Directive and is classed as a UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Priority Habitat. Zostera beds is also on the OSPAR List of threatened and/or declining species and habitats. The OSPAR Convention is the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic. This is a collation of Zostera habitats mapped by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) Phase 1 Intertidal Survey, Intertidal Monitoring Contracts, Fisheries Sensitivity maps as well as point sources derived from casework site visits, CCWs data holdings in Marine Recorder and Environment Agency Wales (EAW) Water Framework Directive (WFD) Monitoring Results. The purpose of this data capture was to create a spatial representation for Zostera habitat across Wales. This collation was carried out for reporting on the distribution of OSPAR Habitats in Wales.
