Skomer Marine Conservation Zone ( MCZ ) - Sea Water Turbidity Recording
In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) was designated in 1990. Sechi disc readings have been taken since 1992. Samples of suspended sediment have been collected from 2 sites since 1994 and turbidity probes / loggers have been used (with limited success) since 2002. The purpose of this data capture was to provide a long-term record of sediment load in the water column and water clarity for the site.

Sechi disc - visual record of depth before disc is lost from sight. Sechi disc data taken weekly. Passive sediment collectors - samples collected over 2 week period. Analysed for dry weight, organic content, trace metals and grain size. Passive sediment collectors - samples are frozen and worked up every 4 years. A Seapoint OEM turbidity probe connected to an Idronaut data logger - optical measure of turbidity. YSI 6600 multiparameter sonde with optical turbidity probe replaced the Idronaut in 2007. Turbidity probe - currently transmitting data to file every 10 mins.
