Marine Monitoring Sites
Site location of Natural Resources Wales' (NRWs) Marine Monitoring Sites within Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). This is general location of the sites where marine monitoring takes place and does not show the individual sample locations. It includes the location of monitoring sites for subtidal rock, subtidal sediment, intertidal rock, intertidal sediment, lagoons, marine climate monitoring sites, marine birds and bird food sites, seals and cetacean monitoring sites as well as areas where acoustic and drop down video monitoring takes place. Information is also available for potential sea cave monitoring sites, however this is not currently a NRW monitoring programme. The purpose of this data capture was to provide an overview of Countryside Council for Wales' (CCW) Marine SAC Monitoring Sites. This is a Wales-wide but concentrated in the SAC and Special Protection Areas (SPAs). However additional sites will be added as they are identified.

All points have been plotted from original waypoints recorded on survey, extracted from Marine Monitoring reports or extracted from samples in Marine Recorder. Several GIS layers have been produced. 1) Point location of survey areas (WalesMonitoringLocations_v5.TAB) 2) Detailed survey locations of the Marine Nature Reserve at Skomer (Skomer monitoring locations.lyr) 3) Line Transects for large scale monitoring, such as for birds and cetaceans (Wales monitoring transects.lyr) 4) Areas within which remotes sensing, such as video or acoustic surveys take place (Wales monitoring areas.lyr) 5) Areas where seal monitoring takes place (Seal monitoring sites.lyr) All samples are mapped in British National Grid projection, although the native WGS84 grid references are retained in the table where originally recorded.
