Canal sediment and peat chemistry at Crymlyn Bog National Nature Reserve (NNR) (2005)
An investigation found that Crymlyn Brook was a major threat to the integrity of the Special Area of Conservation (SAC) qualifying habitats at Crymlyn Bog as it was a source of nitrogen and phosphorous flowing directly in to the area of low-nutrient status transition mire and quaking bog habitats. It was suggested that the course of the brook should be altered to what it was prior to changes and siltation during the latter half of the twentieth century. This would result in it avoiding the sensitive habitats, instead connecting to Glan-y-Wern canal the main route by which water leaves the mire. This dataset contains the results of a survey of the possible route for the reinstatement of the Crymlyn Brook relating to the extant vegetation along the route and the degree and depth to which the substratum is contaminated with mineral oil. Also examined were the depth of the Glan-y-Wern canal and the degree to which the sediments in the canal are contaminated with heavy metals and mineral oil. The purpose of this data capture was to provide information on the depth of standing water in the canal, the chemistry of it's sediments, and various aspects relating to the extent of hydrocarbon pollution within peat lying along the course of a proposed drainage feature.

Sediments were collected and water depth measured at ten sample sites along the Glan-y-Wern canal. A Russian chambered corer was found to be most successful at sampling the bottom sediments, depth of water was measured using a 2.4m, 20mm diameter wooden dowel with graduations and a white wooden circular disk attached to its end. Estimates of the depth of unconsolidated sediment were made at sites accessible by boat. The route of the proposed ditch was surveyed at 21 sample locations at approximately 50m intervals. At each location the grid reference to the nearest metre was taken with a GPS and a simple description of the vegetation was noted (listing dominant species and probable community types). The gross stratigraphy of the peat was described in the field after samples were extracted using a Russian corer down to a depth of 1.5m. The degree of oil contamination was estimated using a six-point scale. Analytical methods were used to measure total nitrogen, phosphorous, sulphur, arsenic, diesel range hydrocarbon etc and the solubility of heavy metals was investigated. Survey initiated in response to a 2004 study which proposed the creation of a link between the functional distal portion of Crymlyn Brook and the Glan Y Wern Canal.
