Assessment of the Nature Conservation Value of Mussel Crumble in the Burry Inlet and the Effects of Dredging/Hand Gathering Operations
The aim of this data capture was to identify and quantify the epifauna and infauna of the mussel crumble beds, quantify the impacts of a simulated 'dredging' operation on the fauna of the beds and assess the stability of the beds in relation to dredging activities. Mussel Crumble are beds of mussels, barnacles, mussel and cockle shells, bound together by the mussel byssus thread. This dataset includes sediment particle size data, macrobenthic infaunal data tables, raw data matrices for the epifaunal quadrats. The purpose of this data capture was to identify and quantify the epifauna and infauna of the mussel crumble beds, quantify the impacts of a simulated 'dredging' operation on the fauna of the beds and assess the stability of the beds in relation to dredging activities.

Suitable mussel crumble was located and it's position recorded using GPS. The latin square took the form of a single line of 12 sampling squares (3m x 36m). Six of the latin squares were sampled for infauna and six for epifauna, of each set of six, three were controls and three were 'dredged'. The simulated 'dredging' method was based on a previous site visit made by the project officer in the company of a person who dredges for mussel seed in the Burry Inlet. The 'dredged' squares were sampled before 'dredging' in December, again immediately afterwards and then once in January, The control squares were sampled once in December and once in January.
