Squirrels of Central Wales (2001)
This dataset contains the records of the presence or absence of red and grey squirrels and associated tree species in four forests, Tywi, Irfon, Crychan and Brechfa, of Central Wales. The aim of this data capture was to determine the presence and distribution of grey and red squirrel and to make some preliminary conclusions on population viability and recommendations for conservation actions for red squirrel.

This is a follow up survey to the collation of historical records of the same area in 2000. Initial visits were carried out to determine the suitability of the areas for surveys. Hair tube surveys were carried out using the methodology standard methodologies. On each site, 101 hair tubes were positioned 100 m apart along transects. Tubes were fixed to trees 2 - 3 m above the level of the ground. Initially the hair was identified visibly but was verified by Sarah Cartmel using a negative staining technique as described by Dagnall et al (1995). A total of 420 records were taken, of which 376 have positive sightings. Two additional sightings were also recorded during the field work. Individual tube locations were not recorded. All grid references are for transect centroids.
