Intertidal Monitoring of LR.Rkp.SwSed Pools in the Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) 2004
Rockpools are an important sub-feature of the 'Reef' feature of the Cardigan Bay SAC, in that they provide habitats of high species richness, often with species that are restricted to rockpool habitats only. The nature of rockpools, particularly those with sediment in the bottom, provides additional challenges to developing a repeatable and reliable method for monitoring of these features. This dataset contains the results of a survey investigating the extent, distribution and species richness of LR.Rkp.SwSed (sand scoured) rockpools at Llanina Point, Cei Bach. Rockpools are an important sub-feature of the 'Reef' feature of the Cardigan Bay SAC, in that they provide habitats of high species richness, often with species that are restricted to rockpool habitats only. Taxonomic identification carried out by experienced intertidal surveyors. Positional accuracy using the dGPS is expected to be 1-5 metres. The aims for the survey of the rockpools at Llanina Point, Cei Bach were to: - map and assess the current extent and distribution of LR.Rkp.SwSed pools within this area - assess the species richness of these rockpools - record any presence of Japanese wireweed Sargassum muticum at the site.

Surveys were carried out three hours either side of low water. Rockpools were chosen which could be easily relocated for future monitoring. Boundaries of distinct pools were mapped using dGPS, characteristics of the pool were recorded (dimensions, location on shore and any distinguishing features) and photographs were taken. Species present were recorded and any plants or animals which could not be identified in the field were collected for further analysis. Additional underboulder species were checked for by turning over at least ten rocks and a small net was used to catch mobile species. A note was made of time spent compiling the species list. In the case of a single large rockpool a series of sampling points measuring 1m2 were surveyed to gain a representative species list, other species that fell outside the sampling area were also noted. Timed counts were carried out over two minute periods for key characterising species (Patella vulgata , Littorina littorea, Pagurus bernhardus, Nucella lapillus, Gibbula umbilicalis) to give an indication of abundance. The rockpools at Cei Bach had previously been identified as species rich during Phase 1 survey carried out by CCW in 1996.
