Intertidal Monitoring of Ruppia maritima in Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Spatial Area of Conservation (SAC) 2004
The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) is therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status. Ruppia maritima is a species of aquatic plant known by the common names beaked tasselweed, widgeongrass, ditch-grass and tassel pondweed. Ruppia maritima (beaked tassle weed) is found in suitable habitats all around the British coast and grows in soft sediments in sheltered shallow coastal waters from full salinity to nearly fresh water. The aim of this survey was to return to an area where Ruppia maritima had previously been identified during a Phase 1 survey carried out by Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) to determine whether or not the species is still present. Ruppia maritima has previously been identified by CCW in 1999 during a Phase 1 survey of the Afon Tywi. It was found at grid reference SN371122 in a pool on a track in the higher saltmarsh in the middle reaches of the river. This area was revisited and the results of the survey can be found in this dataset.

The site and species had previously been identified during a Phase 1 survey carried out by CCW in 1999. The boundary of the pool was mapped using an ORMTEC GIS412 portable dGPS, with software and logger developed specifically for this type of mapping. This system provides continuous or point logging facilities using the IRLA network, providing a temporal repeatable accuracy of between 1-5m. The following methodology was used: - once the site was located, a search for the R. maritima was made. A specimen was taken for formal identification in the laboratory. - photographs were taken of the pool and its location. - the extent of the pool was mapped using the dGPS logger.
