Llyn Tegid automatic monitoring station
Year-to-year changes in the weather have a major effect on the water quality in many freshwater lakes. For example, periods of heavy rain transport more nutrients from the surrounding land while periods of warm, calm weather during the summer promote the growth of cyanobacteria. Llyn Tegid, in Snowdonia, is a deep lake that periodically develops short-lived blooms of cyanobacteria. An automatic station was installed in Llyn Tegid in October 2006 to monitor its response to extreme variations in the weather. This station is fitted with a range of meteorological sensors, a chain of water temperature sensors to record the mixing characteristics of the lake and optical sensors to monitor the spatial distribution of the algae. This dataset includes raw data on parameters recorded by the station at hourly intervals such as conductivity, barometric pressure, mean chlorophyll a, temperature at varying depths, wind speed and direction, solar radiation etc. The reports include an analysis of this data and a review of technical performance of the station. The purpose of this data capture was to monitor the response of Llyn Tegid to variations in the weather and support more detailed studies on the climatic sensitivity of the lake.
