Stoneworts in Wales
This is an excel spreadsheet that is also presented as a spatial dataset. The datasets contains a collation of all known records of stoneworts in Wales from 1726 up till July 2018. Stoneworts (or charophytes) are a group of algae that grow in fresh and brackish water and have a relatively complex structure. They are sensitive to pollution, including nutrient enrichment, and are therefore good indicators of water quality. Thirty species have been recorded in the UK and seventeen of these occur in Wales. Of the latter, four are Red Data Book species, six are Nationally Scarce, and 9 are considered rare in Wales; three are Priority Species in the UK BAP and are included on the National Assembly of Wales' List of Species and Habitats of Principal Importance for the Conservation of Biological Diversity (the \Section 74\" list). The purpose of this data capture is to inform understanding of the distribution and status of rare an/or threatened lichen species in Wales. This in turn will facilitate decision-making on SSSI notifications species status assessments etc."

- Lineage
-
Original records captured in the field, with subsequent microscopic confirmation of taxon identification where necessary. Data collation from existing databases and paper records. Based largely of field work carried out for CCW by N F Stewart. The spreadsheet data was initially compiled in 2002 from data from the Biological Records Centre, survey reports, personal data held by interested botanists and an extensive herbarium and literature search. This was subsequently updated in 2004 and 2007. An additional 500 records have now been added to the 1500 records. Information Warning: The spatail datasets needs to be updated to reflect that latest version of the data (Mar2020)
