Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre Welsh Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) Photo-identification Catalogue (2005-2012) (3rd Party Data)

The conservation status of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) has been categorised by Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) as data deficient, indicating that inadequate information exists for this species concerning its distribution and population status. The only two areas in UK waters that have been identified as having the physical and biological factors essential to the life and reproduction of a population of bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus are Cardigan Bay, Wales and the Moray Firth, Scotland. The bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus population of Cardigan Bay off the west coast of Wales has been estimated to consist of around 125 individuals. The dolphins appear to use the inshore waters of Cardigan Bay for both feeding and reproduction, and in the summer months calves and juveniles are often observed with adult individuals or groups. The dataset contains photographic images of cetaceans from Cardigan Bay, Pwllheli and Fishguard. This photo-identification catalogue consists of an identification sheet for each bottlenose dolphin that has been successfully identified by volunteer researchers at Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre. The recognition of individual bottlenose dolphin is essential to the studies associated with animal behaviour and ecology. Photo-identification was conducted to create a permanent record of bottlenose dolphins encountered around Cardigan Bay and facilitate in the identification of individual bottlenose dolphins as an individual, enabling future identification.

Lineage

Photo-identification is a non-invasive technique of studying cetaceans that uses naturally occurring marks to identify individual animals. Occurrences of scars and damaged tissue on the dolphins dorsal fins are the most distinguishing features of individuals. Images were captured on a camera during an encounter and were systematically uploaded and stored on a computer, then analysed and used to identify individuals. Each captured image underwent a number of processes including sorting and identification. The dolphin identification was then verified by at least one other researcher in order to minimise misidentification and duplication of dolphins within the catalogue. The equipment used was as follows: 33ft research vessel MV Sulaire, shipmate 5300 GPS, Garmin Etrex handheld GPS, Cetrek profish plotter, Canon 20D and Canon 30D Digital SLR cameras with a 75-300 mm lens (various other camera makes and models are used by contributing photographers), desktop PC with relevant software and image storage devices, data forms, safety equipment, binoculars and a bank of trained and dedicated volunteers and researchers. The photographic analysis was undertaken by Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre and associated volunteers. Cardigan Bay is a designated Special Area of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive. Data is provided to NRW as a condition of the European Species Licence.
