Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon Geophysical Investigation (February 2012) (3rd Party Data)
A hydrographic and geophysical survey of the proposed Swansea tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay was carried out by Titan Environmental Surveys Ltd in the winter of 2011/12. This included singlebeam echosounder, sidescan sonar, surface tow boomer and magnetometer surveys. All data were referenced to OSGB36 datum using OSTN02 datum transformation, and seabed bathymetry was reduced to chart datum using the UKHO Vertical Offshore reference frame (VORF) model. The dataset shows a gently sloping seabed of thin sand and gravels overlying a sequence of fine sediments of up to 20m thickness on top of boulder clay. An outcrop of boulder clay divides the site into E and W zones with featureless smooth sands in the E, and predominantly gravel in the W. No bedforms large enough to produce bathymetric features were identified. The purpose of this data capture was to carry out a hydrographic and geophysical survey of the proposed Swansea Tidal Lagoon site in Swansea Bay. Data provided to Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) for internal business use only - for consultation on the Swansea Bay Tidal lagoon casework . Odom Hydrotrac single beam echosounder at 200KHz and 16/sec sounding rate. Fully corrected using on board motion sensor and VORF models for tidal correction to chart datum. Sidescan sonar data captured using an Edgetech 4200-FS sidescan sonar, recording frequencies at 100 and 400 MHz simultaneously. See report for further information. Survey carried out by professional hydrographers. All data corrected and referenced to OSGB36 datum and chart datum for bathymetry using the UKHO Vertical Offshore Reference Frasme (VORF) model.
