EIRGrid plc East West Interconnector Project in the Irish Sea (3rd Party Data)
FUGRO OSAE GmbH was contracted by EirGrid to survey an electrical cable route for the East West Interconnector Project which links the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom by a power cable. The final selected route links Rush North Beach in Ireland and Barkby Beach in North Wales. JP Kenny acted as marine engineering advisor. This route was fully surveyed with bathymetric, environmental, geophysical and geotechnical methods from landing site to landing site. The total length of the final selected route from Rush North Beach to Barkby Beach is approximately 186 km and between 400 to 500 m wide. This data was required to plan the most favourable route option for installation of the cable link between Ireland (Rush, North Beach) to North Wales (Prestatyn, Barkby Beach).

Geophysical survey used single and multibeam echosounder, sidescan sonar, gradiometer and sub-bottom profiler / boomer. Additional multibeam and echosounder lines were surveyed to the south of the original proposed route between approximately KP 111 and KP 117, of the surveyed route, to investigate an area of horse mussels (Modiolus modiolus). Environmental survey involved sediment sampling and drop-down digital still and video photography at 110 stations. Grab sampling using a 0.1 m2 Day grab or 0.1 m2 Hamon grab was undertaken at 110 stations with each retained sample photographed and logged to provide a description of the sediment and any obvious fauna. Towed camera transects were undertaken along selected regions of the route corridor using a Kongsberg oe14-208 digital stills camera with video streaming capability. Bathymetry survey all water depths were reduced to Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT). Positions are described relative to the surveyed cable route The survey was contracted by EirGrid (State owned power transmission company, that owns and operates the Irish National electricity grid) High - all observations made by experienced proffesional contractors following international standards and methodology of data collection.
