UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH): Land Cover Map 2000 and 2007 (3rd Party Data)
Land Cover Map is a UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH) spatial dataset, which NRW acquires under licence. There are two datasets that NRW get from UKCEH, these being Land Cover Map 2000 and Land Cover Map 2007. NRW only has a segment of the data and not the whole of GB. This segment covers, the whole of Wales, cross boarder catchments and coastal areas around the Bristol Channel. Land Cover Map 2000 (LCM2000) updates and substantially upgrade UKCEH's Land Cover Map of Great Britain (LCMGB) 1990 and also cover Northern Ireland. This was the first UKCEH all UK dataset. LCM200 was classified in relation to JNCC's Broad Habitats, and so encompasses the entire range of UK Habitats. LCM2000 is used for a wide range of applications including environmental character assessments, environmental protection, transport planning, animal disease distribution, bird and habitat relationships and forestry research. Land Cover Map 2007 (LMC2007) was released in July 2011, and is a parcel-based classification of UK land cover. LCM2007 builds upon the successes of the parcel-based mapping of LMC2000 and employs similar but enhanced classification techniques.

Land Cover Map 2000 was created based on information from JNCC's Broad Habitats. Instead of representing the land surface as regular sized pixels, OBIA considers the land surface as a collection of discrete irregular objects such as forests, lakes, urban areas and fields. Land cover objects for LCM2000 were derived from image segments and were assigned land cover values according to the pixel distributions within. These classifications were then refined using contextual and ancillary information. NRW only has a segment of the data and not the whole of GB. This segment covers, the whole of wales, cross boarder catchments and coastal areas around the Bristol Channel. The principle difference between LCM2007 and LCM2000 is the source of land cover parcels. LCM2007 parcels come from generalised digital cartography refined with image segments, whereas LCM2000 uses only image segments. The LCM2007 data uses cartographic boundaries accurately delineate real-world land cover objects (e.g. lakes, fields, settlements, industrial areas, semi-natural areas). This improves the spatial accuracy of LCM2007 over LCM2000. The accurate delineation of real-world objects also helps to clarify the spectral properties of the land surface and therefore also improves thematic accuracy. NRW only has a segment of the data and not the whole of GB. This segment covers, the whole of wales, cross boarder catchments and coastal areas around the Bristol Channel.
