Cadw: Listed Buildings (3rd Party Data)
Natural Resources of Wales (NRW) are supplied a number of historic and cultural datasets under a licence from Cadw. Cadw is the Welsh Government’s historic environment service working for an accessible and well-protected historic environment for Wales. They were set up with the aim of conserving Wales’s heritage, helping people understand and care about their history and helping to sustain the distinctive character of Wales. Buildings and structures of national importance are given legal protection by being placed on a ‘List’ of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. This is a third party spatial dataset containing information on the CADW designated sites and listed buildings in Wales. In Wales there are over 29,000 buildings and structures on the list. Listed buildings range from Medieval Churches to modern commercial premises etc, structures can include railings, gate piers, walls, war memorials, gravestones, post boxes and telephone boxes.

Buildings on the List are given one of three grades which denote their level of importance, Grade I being the highest. The Grades are: Grade I - Are of exceptional interest Grade II - Are particularly important Grade II - Are of special interest The Listing of buildings and structures is an ongoing process. Buildings and structures can also be removed from the List in a process called ‘De-Listing’.
- Additional Information
-
Individual buildings of special architectural or historic interest have been given special protection in planning law, most recently the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, as amended by the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2016 and supplemented by guidance. Local planning authorities have primary responsibility for much of the work referred to, and Cadw supports them in fulfilling that role as well as, in certain cases, playing an important part in the planning process.
