Cadw: Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) (3rd Party Data)
Natural Resources of Wales (NRW) are supplied a number of historic and cultural datasets under a licence from Cadw. Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service working for an accessible and well-protected historic environment for Wales. They were set up with the aim of conserving Wales's heritage, helping people understand and care about their history and helping to sustain the distinctive character of Wales. This is a spatial dataset containing basic information concerning Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAM) that lie within the boundaries of Wales. The data has been provided as a guide to the SAMs. Areas have been interpreted from paper maps taken from original legal documents and therefore remain indicative only. Archaeological sites of national importance are given legal protection by being placed on a 'Schedule' of monuments. Under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, the Welsh Ministers are required to compile and maintain this schedule.

The digital data of Scheduled Ancient Monuments in Wales mostly derived from the digitization of scheduled areas based on the Ordnance Survey 1:10,000 and 1:10,560 base maps. Some Scheduled Ancient Monuments have been digitized against Ordnance Survey land-line mapping and therefore the boundaries may not reflect features present on the 1:10,000 background map. In Wales there are over 4000 examples of Scheduled Monuments, which include Roman remains, burial mounds, castles, bridges, earthworks, the remains of deserted villages, industrial sites and 20th century military complexes etc.
